Terms of Service

Last updated 22 July 2026

Welcome to Poise. These terms are the agreement between you and Poise for using the app and website. Written in plain English — read them once, keep them in mind. If you create an account, connect a bank, or use any part of the service, you’re agreeing to what’s here.

What Poise is

Poise is a household budgeting app. We help you see your transactions, plan bills, save toward goals, and pay off debt. We connect to your bank read-only through Plaid to fetch transaction history — we never move money, and we never see your bank login.

Poise is not a bank, not a broker, and not a licensed financial advisor. The numbers we show you — safe-to-spend, debt-free date, projected income — are informational tools built from your data, not personalised financial advice. Decisions about your money are yours.

Who can use it

  • You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your region).
  • You’re responsible for keeping your account credentials safe. If someone else signs in as you, whatever they do counts as your actions.
  • Give us accurate information when you sign up (real name, real email). If any of it changes, update it in Settings.

Your data, your bank

You keep ownership of everything you put into Poise. We only use it to run the app for you — the full details are in our Privacy Policy, which is part of these Terms.

Bank connections flow through Plaid. Plaid’s terms and privacy policy also apply to how your bank data is handled. You can disconnect any bank at any time from Settings → Banks — we stop receiving new data from that institution immediately.

Subscriptions & billing

  • Poise offers a free 14-day trial on our paid plans. During the trial you get every feature; we don’t charge you until it ends.
  • After the trial, if you subscribed, we charge the payment method on file for the plan you chose (monthly or yearly). Charges renew automatically until you cancel.
  • Cancel any time from Settings → Subscription. Cancelling stops future charges. Your access continues until the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
  • Refunds: we don’t issue automatic refunds for partial periods, but if something feels wrong — a charge you didn’t expect, a bug that cost you real use of the app — email us and we’ll make it right.
  • Prices, plan features, and free-tier limits can change with notice. If we raise a price for a plan you’re on, we’ll email you before it takes effect and you can cancel first.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. Card details are handled by Stripe; we only see the last four digits.

Fair use

Please don’t:

  • Try to break, reverse-engineer, decompile, or probe the security of Poise.
  • Scrape or automate access outside of what a normal app does — no bots pounding the API, no headless clients logging in 100 accounts at once.
  • Use Poise to do anything illegal, fraudulent, or that infringes someone else’s rights.
  • Upload data (receipt images, notes) that’s harmful, deceptive, or that you don’t have the right to share.
  • Resell, sublicense, or repackage Poise as your own product.

If we notice patterns that look like abuse, we may pause or close the account involved.

Ownership

Poise’s name, brand, code, and design belong to us. Your data — the transactions, budgets, goals, notes, images — belongs to you. You give us the limited licence needed to store it and show it back to you inside the app and to the other members of your household. That licence ends the moment you delete your data or your account.

Ending things

You can leave at any time from Settings → Danger zone. Your profile is deleted immediately; household data cleans up as described in the Privacy Policy.

We may suspend or close an account if it’s clearly being used against these Terms, if we’re legally required to, or if we shut the service down (in which case we’ll give reasonable notice and help you export your data first).

No warranties

Poise is provided as-is. We work hard to make the numbers accurate, but transaction data comes from third parties (banks, Plaid), AI categorisation isn’t perfect, and forecasts are estimates. Always double-check important figures against your bank — especially before making a big financial decision.

To the fullest extent allowed by law, we disclaim all implied warranties (fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, non-infringement) that aren’t explicitly written here.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law:

  • Poise isn’t liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages — including lost profits, lost data (beyond what we keep in backups), or financial decisions you made based on what the app showed you.
  • Our total liability for any claim connected to Poise is capped at the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or CA$100 if you’re on the free tier.

Some jurisdictions don’t allow these limits, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Indemnity

If a third party brings a claim against us because of how you used Poise — breaking these Terms, breaking the law, infringing someone’s rights — you agree to cover our reasonable costs of defending it. This doesn’t apply to things that are our fault.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms as the product changes. Material changes will be flagged in the app before they take effect. The “Last updated” date at the top always reflects the current version. Continuing to use Poise after a change means you’re accepting the new Terms; if you don’t agree, you can cancel and delete your account.

Where these Terms live legally

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, and the federal laws of Canada that apply. Any dispute that can’t be resolved by writing to us first will be handled by the courts of Ontario.

If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a particular right, that’s not a waiver — we may still do so later.
